Where to stay in Stockholm: Hotel J

Hotel J is located on the waterside at Nacka Strand, east of Stockholm, and was named after the J class sailing yachts of the America’s Cup.

The decor is consistently nautical, throughout all the rooms and common areas. The pared-down style combines Scandinavian design with elements inspired by Newport yacht clubs: a palette of white, red, and blue, striped textiles, light oak, and sailing paraphernalia.

Hotel J is the perfect place to connect both to the city and the Stockholm archipelago.

From the hotel, you can walk along the water to reach the pier at Nacka Strand in just a few minutes.

The journey by boat to the center of Stockholm (Nybroplan) takes a little over half an hour, for the price of a public transport ticket. This distance allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, to recharge your batteries, and see the Swedish capital from a different angle. It’s the ideal way to explore a city surrounded by water.

The hotel consists of 3 buildings in a shaded park with oak, willow, and birch trees.

The main, red brick building dates back to 1912, and has been fully renovated. It houses the reception, a lobby with a fireplace, as well as several rooms. In the winter, you can cozy up by the fire and enjoy a soothing jazz melody while the fire crackles in the hearth.

The breakfast buffet is served in the Tornvilla. This elegant 1889 villa contains around twenty rooms and was originally a Swedish summer residence. The renovation of the building, which was completed in 2011, maintained the patina, the authenticity and splendor of days gone by.

The hotel offers 6 room categories, from the Standard (21 to 24 m²) with a garden view, to the two-floor Junior Suite (37 m²) with a sea view.

Our room is in the main building, with a view of the park and the sea beyond. It’s spacious and light, with a decor that combines whites and blues with oak furniture and flooring. The double bed is soft and comfortable, making for a restful night’s sleep in this massive old sailboat by the Baltic Sea.

The bathroom is classic and elegant. Stéphanie loves using the Byredo skincare and bath products.

From the balcony, Jérôme can’t get enough of watching the ferries between Stockholm and Tallinn, Helsinki, and different ports in Finland, as they glide by.

Thanks to its commitment to the environment, the hotel has been awarded a Nordic Swan Ecolabel: Hotel J is using renewable energy, limiting the use of chemical detergents, cutting back on waste, and reducing energy and water usage.

To relax, you can book a session at the Njuta spa or try the sauna before jumping into the sea (which according to Swedish tradition is mandatory!). The hotel has its own dock on the Baltic Sea.

The hotel restaurant, Restaurant J, is located by the pier at Nacka Strand, just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. It offers flavorful dishes made from local ingredients, such as seafood platters. The interior of the restaurant echoes the nautical style of the hotel.

Once the weather gets warm, the large waterfront terrace is the ideal place to enjoy a drink and relax in the sun. On colder days, you can warm yourself by the fireplace inside.

We particularly enjoyed:
• The nautical decor, with a blend of Newport and Scandinavia
• The view of the Baltic Sea from the hotel dock and the balcony of our room
• The charming boat ride from the hotel to the center of Stockholm
• The generous and delicious breakfast buffet
• The freshly made food and wonderful atmosphere at Restaurant J

Thank you! It definitely has great ferry links to Stockholm. The city is also building a metro line out to Nacka, so a few years from now it will be even easier to access 😊

I haven’t been to Sweden yet but this is now on my list for when I go! What a cute hotel, and I love the steps they’re taking to be eco friendly!

Did you find the ferry to Stockholm to be annoying or were you mostly at the hotel?

Thank you! It’s pretty much the only hotel we want to stay at in Stockholm now 🥰
The ferry is actually part of the pleasure for us. We’re sure it can be a little annoying in the winter, but in the summer it’s just gorgeous. We would take the ferry in to town after a leisurely breakfast, spend most of the day in the city, and then take the ferry back after dinner. Just lovely!
