In the heart of Alsace, just 7 km from Colmar, the village of Eguisheim seems like something out of a fairytale. With its colorful half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, and facades covered in flowers, it is the epitome of the authentic charm of Alsatian villages. An ideal destination to wander around and soak up the atmosphere of times gone by.

Eguisheim has long been considered one of the most beautiful villages in France, even earning the title of “France’s favorite village” in 2013.

As enter Eguisheim’s old town, we get the impression of walking into postcard. Even though the town is fortified, there is no sign of the traditional high surrounding walls. The houses are arranged in concentric circles, forming the village’s battlements. This unique configuration encourages visitors to explore and gives us a wonderful feeling of being able to get lost without ever truly losing our way.
We begin our visit on rue du Rempart, walking along it in both directions in order to take in the different views of the narrow streets.
The colorful half-timbered houses, the façades adorned with lush plants and flowers, and the wrought-iron shop signs only add to the picturesque charm of the village.
Our route is dotted with artisan workshops and traditional trade shops (biscuit factories, confectioner’s and butcher’s shops…). We catch a whiff of the mouthwatering aroma of choucroute, baeckeoffe and other dishes simmered in Alsatian wine, emanating from typical restaurants.
Stopping by Eguisheim is also a great opportunity to sample local wines (all in moderation) from iconic regional varieties, such as Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

In the center of the village, the Château Saint-Léon brings to mind Eguisheim’s medieval history.

The fountain dedicated to Pope Leo IX, who was born here, and St. Peter and Paul’s church are testaments to its rich heritage.

Eguisheim is in perfect keeping with the way one imagines an Alsatian village should look. Its authenticity attracts visitors from all over the world, and its proximity to Colmar allows you easily combine exploring this typical village with a stay in the capital of the Haut-Rhin department.

Our recommendations:
• Opt for a morning visit, before the streets get too crowded
• Park on parking du Millénaire (rue des Oiseaux), which is free with public toilets nearby, then walk to the old town (10 mins)
• Enter the village on rue du Rempart (“nord” or “sud”). Follow the street until you come back to where you started, then turn around and walk back the other way
