Edinburgh: Dean Village, a hidden gem

Dean Village, a hidden gem of a neighborhood in the Scottish capital’s New Town, is a collection of picturesque houses nestled along the lush banks of the Water of Leith. Walking the cobbled streets lined with stone and brick buildings and half-timbered houses feels like travelling back in time to the Victorian period, much to the delight of Stéphanie.

Once a prosperous industrial hub, this charming village is now a peaceful haven for those wanting a break from the bustling city center. The houses are so well maintained that one could still imagine millers walking around the courtyards and side streets.

In the 19th century, Well Court, the central building adorned with turrets and bay windows, served as accommodation for workers at the many water mills along the river. It is one of the rare buildings in the Arts & Crafts style that can still be seen in Edinburgh.

We recommend exploring Dean Village in the morning to soak up the unique atmosphere of this quiet neighborhood and make the most of the light.
