Hunawihr is a picturesque village nestled along the famous Alsace Wine Route. In the autumn, its fortified church, vineyards in blazing colors and half-timbered houses make it an absolute must-see.
Hunawihr is one of the gems of the Alsace Wine Route, and a perfect addition to a day trip to Kaysersberg and Riquewihr, located are only a few miles away. Having been named one of “The most beautiful villages of France”, this tiny wine country village has been able to preserve its old-world charm with its quaint half-timbered houses and ancient fountains.

One of the distinctive features of Hunawihr is the fortified church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur. This 15th-century church, surrounded by a walled cemetery, seems almost to watch over vineyards and half-timbered houses. From the church and churchyard, the view of the rolling landscape with vineyards as far as the eye can see, is incredible.

From the church and churchyard, the view of the rolling landscape with vineyards as far as the eye can see, is incredible.

In the autumn, the vines take on a palette of warm, golden colors. Seeing row upon row of bright yellow vine stocks in the changing hues of the amber sunlight, creates an almost dream-like atmosphere. A hike through the vineyards is a must.

Our recommendations:
Park your car near the Sainte-Hune fountain (free parking) and follow the pedestrian path or the road by the fountain towards the church. Another free parking lot is available a little further up on rue Sainte-Hune.

The skittles (traditional bowling) alley on rue Sainte-Hune offers a stunning view of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur Church.

From there, take the path running up the hill to the left, to enjoy the endless vistas over the neighboring wine country. In the distance, the 3 castles of Ribeauvillé overlook the landscape.

I love charming little French villages like these with traditional houses, floral vibes, grand views and infinite vineyards that can be referred to as fairy tale villages because of their colourful houses and unique architecture. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
