Where to eat tarte flambée in Strasbourg: Schatzi

Located in the heart of Strasbourg, Schatzi focuses on traditional Alsatian cuisine and local producers, with a menu consisting of artisanal tartes flambées, in a convivial atmosphere.

In the historic city center around Strasbourg Cathedral, Schatzi celebrates one of the essential parts of Alsatian culture. The restaurant highlights the produce and culinary arts of the region.

What is Schatzi’s specialty, you ask? It’s Flammekueche, Alsatian tartes flambées. On the menu, you’ll find a variety of savory and sweet tartes, from traditional ones to more daring combos and toppings. They are prepared with a crispy crust, which is hand-made with flour from a nearby mill. The savory tartes are topped with local ingredients, such as Alsatian pork lardons, made by a Strasbourg butcher according to a unique recipe. A special mention goes to the delicious tarte with Comté cheese and crunchy toasted walnuts, and the sweet dessert tarte generously garnished with apples and cinnamon.

The restaurant’s friendly atmosphere encourages cozy meals with friends and family, where everyone shares. The interior combines the traditional aspects of an Alsatian Winstub with more modern touches, creating an inviting and convivial space. To wash down your tartes flambée, Schatzi offers a carefully selected variety of French and Alsatian wines.

Schatzi is an affectionate nickname, meaning “little treasure” in Alsatian. The restaurant focuses on the crafts- and tradespeople that are the true treasures of the region: farmers, butchers, winemakers, bakers… Favoring local distribution channels, this approach promotes sustainability, supports local producers and offers an authentic experience.

We particularly enjoyed

  • The single-product concept around tarte flambée
  • The jovial and friendly service
  • The thin, crispy crust and the richness of the Schmeer (cream with Alsatian fromage blanc, nutmeg and a secret spice blend)

The tradition around tarte flambée in Alsace

In Alsace, tarte flambée, or flammekueche (pronounced flam-uh-keusch), is a dish centered around conviviality and sharing. As opposed to pizza, where everyone chooses and eats their dish of choice, the ritual of tarte flambée is based on all the guests around the table sharing one or two tartes.

Everyone starts by agreeing on what to order first (to us, that is usually a Traditionnelle, with Schmeer, onions and lardons), and the next ones might have additional toppings. A few minutes lates, the server sets down the still steaming tarte on a wooden board in the middle of the table, before asking what the next order will be.

One of the guests cuts the tart into (more or less equal) parts, and the meal continues until it is decided to tell the server that the next one will be the last. To end the evening on a sweet note, foodies will sometimes (often!) opt for a dessert tarte, which is also shared by everyone around the table

Oh, thank you! I was looking for your “about” page but couldn’t find it for some reason. Last year on the way to Paris, an American woman I met went on and on and ON about how great the Christmas markets are in Strasbourg. I’d love to see a post on those.
