A French restaurant in Strasbourg: Chère Amie

Chère Amie is both chic and cozy. Located in Strasbourg’s tastefully renovated old post office building, the restaurant pays tribute to the art of correspondence, all while offering a generous and sophisticated cuisine.

In the Neustadt quarter, Strasbourg’s historic imperial neighborhood, one spot in particular sparks a certain curiosity as soon as someone mentions its name: Chère Amie. This French brasserie located in the Neo-Gothic former post office is elegant and spacious, with an atmosphere that highlights the history of letter-writing.

As soon as we walk in the door, our eyes are drawn to the unique decor, designed by Pascal Claude Drach: sheets of paper seem to be floating above the bar like pending missives, fully written letters are suspended from lamps, the walls are full of postcards from a different time, and the silhouettes of different women writing at desks call to mind the central theme of the restaurant.

The evening menu offers French classics with a creative twist – from œufs mayonnaise, pâté en croûte and bone marrow, to beef tartare, fillet of sea bream and supreme of chicken with morels. Fans of seafood and fish will love the Buffet de la mer: octopus, tuna tartare, marinated mackerel, salmon, oysters, seafood platters… Guests may also choose from a selection of vegetarian options, as well as several salads. The menu changes every two to three months, all while keeping the signature dishes that make up the identity of the restaurant.

The food at Chère Amie celebrates tradition with sincerity and elegance. A special mention for the bouchée à la reine (known in certain areas as vol-au-vent) which really impressed Stéphanie. The desserts, such as the creamy baba, the Saint-Honoré and the Envelope – a house-made creation which changes flavors with the seasons – are the perfect ending to this epistolary evening of indulgence.

The friendly and relaxed attitude of the staff contributes to the general conviviality of the atmosphere, while the well-designed acoustics of the vast restaurant space ensure guests still have an intimate experience. The open kitchen adds a dynamic touch, without disturbing the peaceful ambiance. Our meal comes to a close like a lovely letter that begs to be re-read. We look forward to coming back soon, for lunch or for dinner. Until next time, Chère Amie!

We particularly enjoyed

  • The intricate interior, which pays tribute to the history of the building
  • The friendly and relaxed staff
  • The wonderfully balanced dishes
  • The well-designed acoustics
