A Michelin-star restaurant in Strasbourg: Le 1741

Located in an elegant bourgeois townhouse on quai des Bateliers in Strasbourg, Le 1741 (1 Michelin star) offers an extraordinary culinary experience.

The restaurant is named after the year that the Palais Rohan – located right across the river Ill – was built.

The establishment reopened in August 2023 after 8 months of renovations. The architects have both preserved and adapted the architectural elements form the restaurant’s past. Each space has been redesigned to achieve a balance between the history of the building and a more contemporary vision.

Le 1741 has a relaxed atmosphere where fine French cooking meets bold flavors and respect for traditions.

The dynamic and refined cuisine of chef Jérémy Page, who trained with the legendary Joël Robuchon, makes for magical dishes with fresh and local produce, as well as luxury ingredients.

The menu changes weekly, according to the seasons and the dietary restrictions of the diners. Five, seven or nine-course menus are offered for lunch and dinner, while a three-course menu is added at lunchtime on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

We go for the five-course menu.

The amuse-bouches set the tone for the evening before the appetizers are even served. We leave it to the chef to guide us on the culinary journey he has planned for us.

The amuse-bouche with smoked eel and celeriac ravioli in a kombu broth brings back memories of kaiseki dinners in a ryokan in Japan.

The teppanyaki-seared fillet of John Dory – and later, wild boar – are mastered to perfection. The sauces and sides enhance every dish.

The chef even achieves the feat of making Stéphanie enjoy Périgord black truffle, and Jérôme like sweetbread.

The first dessert, inspired by the flavors of a Piña Colada, is our favorite. The first spoonful feels like tasting a rich cloud of coconut. The pineapple brunoise, banana crémeux and rum granita take us right back to the Caribbean. The flavors of this layered treat are incredibly fresh and smooth.

The restaurant’s wine cellar houses hundreds of bottles carefully selected by Michael Wagner, who was named Luxembourg’s Best Sommelier in 2010. From great wineries to natural or organic wines, the wine menu harmonizes flawlessly with every dish.

Le 1741 is much more than just the salon on the ground floor. Different salons and boudoirs are distributed over three levels, each with its own unique ambiance. From the cozy and baroque Salon de Cotte to the understated allure of Salon Massol with a view on the river, Palais Rohan, and the Cathedral, via the intimate alcove Boudoir Cagliostro, every space has its own particular charm. The Espace Cuisine offers a fascinating culinary show – where you can watch your dishes be prepared in a convivial atmosphere.

Le 1741 is one of our favorite recent dining experiences in Strasbourg. Behind the discreet charm of the façade, you will find an elegant restaurant and unforgettable flavors.

Reservations are a must. Make sure you share any allergies and food intolerances with the staff as soon as you make your reservation.

We particularly enjoyed:

  • The care and thought behind the plating and presentation
  • The excellent balance in flavor combinations
  • The perfectly cooked meats and fish
  • The flawless harmony the wine package as well as the home made alcohol-free beverages had with each dish
  • The textures: from the interior to the feel of the chairs, to the cutlery and tableware
  • The thoughtful and attentive maître d’hôtel

Thanks! We think so too. I mean, it’s expensive for a restaurant, but places of this caliber will easily run three our four times this price in London, NYC or Paris. Do you agree?
